We own a late 1930’s house on the bank of The Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in Oklahoma and an Antique and Classic Boat restoration business. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to own a ranch and cattle. In 2011 we purchased ranch land adjacent to the lake house, restored and expanded the house for residence, moved the boat restoration shop to the ranch, and explored types of cattle to raise.
We chose Registered Texas Longhorn for multiple reasons. We then joined TLBAA and ITLA. We were new to ‘everything’ but it quickly became obvious that Genetics and Patience is key. Longhorn Owners are sharing people and they put us on the fast track to getting started. We bought 4 cows, 4 calves and a bull. We butchered one and enjoyed the wonderful tasting grass fed lean meat. Next we bought Cow Calf pairs. The next two years our Bull Thunder bred the herd to 30. We sold the Bull and chose to artificial insemination (AI) the next crop of calves for the best genetics. We are patiently working our way to building and maintaining a 100 head herd.
If you are new to, or thinking about, raising Longhorns we would be happy to share our start up experiences with you. If you have been in the business a long time come bless us with your thoughts to improve our cattle operation.
We welcome your visit to Howard Haven Ranch via OK Highway 82 or a Mile of Runway (airport) just 10 minutes from the ranch.
